52 weeks project

I have joined my sweet friend, Sarah, from My Four Hens Photography, in a 52 week photo project. My first 52 week project helped me grow and learn so much, that I thought it was a must for me this year. Plus, I need more pics of my baby (or babies, if you include Lola.) What better way to see the changes throughout the year. Last year she grew almost 3 inches! Can you believe it? Each week Sarah shares a theme with us and we interpret it however we like. It's amazing to see everyone's shots. I shared my first photo, Resolution, a few posts back. It was a beautiful butterfly I was lucky enough not to scare away. I hope everyone is settling into the new year complete with a new energy and new hope for the year ahead. My hope for the new year is to not be afraid to spread my new wings and fly with my little Chasing J Bird Photography biz.

I also want to capture more of my J Bird. She has grown so quickly and is not as eager to be a willing model, so I really need to let go of my perfectionism and settle for any snapshots I can get of her along the way. Can you believe she has grown 3 inches in exactly a year's time? Wow, I know. Anyway, I hope the new year brings you many new opportunities to grow and spread your wings, as well. Oh and don't forget to click away whenever you can and capture those moments.

The D. Family Preview

So it's been a long time a-coming but here is a little sneak peek at one of my last shoots of the year. I am so thankful to each family that I have had the opportunity to shoot so far. I had a late start up for Chasing J Bird Photography this year, but it has been such a rewarding experience. I hope 2012 is full of exciting, creative adventures for us. I can't wait. The K. Family | Sneak Peek

I loved everything about working with these sweeties. First, they are friends that trusted me with their photos, so that means so much to me. Second, how can you not love them? They are all gorgeous and I loved the colors they wore for the shoot. It was a gorgeous day and it made those colors just pop. I loved it. And finally, I loved watching the little ones just being kids. I brought my J Bird along and found out she's a valuable tool when children are around. I'll need to keep that a secret before she requests some sort of payment.

Here is a sneak peek of that colorful, happy, gorgeous shoot. I hope we can do it again!

This last one is probably my favorite shot. The little one had just let out a huge sneeze and everyone was giggling. At first I considered it a blooper shot, but I can't help but love it!

The C. Family | Sneak Peek

What a beautiful day for photos this day turned out to be and I have to say I got my workout in chasing this adorable little two year old around. Little B. was so stinkin' cute in his cowboy chaps, spurs and hat. Can you believe that at two he is already a champion roper? The funny thing is that he refused to rope for us that day. Oh well, it's a great excuse to come back someday and shoot some more photos. I just loved the area and the C. family was so sweet. I hope they enjoy the few sneak peeks at their photo shoot.

I'm so excited to say that the Chasing J Bird Photography website is finally live and ready! I hope ya'll visit it at www.chasingjbirdphotography.com and also visit us on our Facebook page. Although I will have very few sessions available for these last few months of the year, I am excited to get started. On a different note, we adopted our newest family member in August. Her name is Lola and she's a Lab mix. She's kept us busy these last few months, but we're happy to have her with us. Her are a few pics of her. You can tell that she gets away with a lot with this face.

Sneak Peek for Miss A.

Here's a sneak peek of some of my favorite pics of Miss A's bridal shoot. I was so lucky she was up for anything. I feel terrible that she ended up with mud on her gown, but she was a real trooper. I couldn't have asked for a better model. There are so many more to choose from, but I couldn't help but want to play with these first.

I was so happy to hear that Miss A. wanted to have some bridal shots before her wedding. Plus, she was up for anything. What photographer doesn't love to hear that? I couldn't have asked for a better model. She had the most gorgeous, natural smile and she was super sweet. Except for the fact that she forgot one tiny thing...her ring...she was perfect. Luckily, she had her sister with her and we weren't too far from home. We had a ring in no time. I am just beginning to work on her photos, but I knew this was going to be one of my favorites right from the start. I hope she likes it as much as I do.

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! We spent almost all day Sunday creating these adorable little Valentine characters for J Bird's classmates. I want to give a HUGE thank you to Meg for sharing this fabulous idea with us on her blog post. I know I ripped it off, but how could I disappoint my 5 year old? At least that's what I keep telling myself. It was quite a task, but a whole bunch fun to make these little guys. I do have to admit that my hubby was responsible for most of the cool, boy valentines, but I was the master of the hot glue gun. So, I(and my burned fingers) will insist on some of the credit.

Hello!

I know, I know...where have I been, right? Hello? Anyone? I have been neglecting my Flickr account and my blog the last few months, but I really want to get back to them soon. Really, I do! I just wanted to pop in and say hello. So.... Hello!

The little one had the flu, I always have one other big thing around the corner at work and now the holidays are upon us. So life is busy and, besides the flu bug, everything is good. I did mention in my last post that I had some things in store for any locals interested in portraits. I was hoping to offer some mini-sessions, but it looks like I will shoot for Spring instead. If you are interested and want to get in touch, please feel free to shoot me an email.

Meanwhile, I hope you take a minute and enjoy the holidays. It really is one of my favorite times of the year.

Sandcastle Days 2010

A couple of weeks ago we made our annual trip to visit the Sandcastle Days festival. I believe it's our 4th year in a row. The weather is always wonderful, except for the one red tide year. I get a scratchy throat just thinking about it. *cough, cough* To be honest, J Bird is more interested in playing in the sand than checking out the amazing sand sculptures that have been entered into the annual competition.

So, after quickly checking out the sculptures we headed out to our favorite beach spot. Work began on her own little sand sculpture, shell collecting, and playing in the surprisingly warm water. It was such a nice day. I want to go head back already.

We really need to get back soon!

So Much Going On!

Ok, so maybe the 365 project was a bit much for me to take on, but I couldn't give up before the 30 day mark. I had to give it a real go.

Truth be told, I take so many photos already and I've pushed myself further than expected before this project that I think the guilt factor won't be too much of a concern for me. Ok, well maybe a little guilt, but it will pass soon enough. I admire everyone who jumps in with both feet and actually make it to the end. I've seen what this project can do. I will continue to try to discover something new every. single. day. That will not change. However, I want to concentrate my energy on other projects. Hopefully, I'll be making an announcement here for any locals that happen to follow my blog and are interested in my type of photography for your family. *Tap, tap, tapping microphone* Hello, anyone? Anyone at all out there? Oh well, silence has never stopped me before. I'm excited about the possibilities. Keep checking this site for more info.

Meanwhile, I will make my husband crazy by throwing ideas at him and begging him to assist me on my little shoots. They really do go so much better when he's around to help. Last week I managed to get out by myself with J Bird and we happened to catch the most wonderful golden light. Why was this such a big deal? It was after a long day at work and school. We had to go home to change J Bird out of her school uniform, grab camera gear, and drive to our location. We caught the sun in the last few minutes before sunset. Thankfully, she was up for the adventure. Look at this light.

I had been dying to photograph J Bird with our new Gracylu Original headpiece made by the fabulous Tristian. Her headpieces had inspired me to make one of my own during the wait for this piece to arrive. Remember this one? Who knew I could be somewhat creative? Tristian creates such unique and funky pieces including bridal pieces and adorable little hats. You should definitely check her site out if you get a minute or if you're just plain curious. They're definitely not meant for playtime, but they look great in photos.

It was fun to get off of our regular schedule for this shoot and come away with such fab shots. We only had a few minutes of real shoot time, but we enjoyed this location (with the exception of the crazy wind.) We found some awesome pecan trees and she picked a few pecans that had already fallen. As a matter fact, we ran into an older couple that were picking pecans, as well. I think they were a bit amused with us. I didn't realize we were being watched until J Bird mentioned it. Awkward moment! Oh, to think of all the funky positions I was in to get my shots. Never mind....let's move on.

A quick shoot, but definitely worth the wind and the awkward moments. I can't help but share these with you. They make my soul sing. This one has to be one of my all time faves with the leaves on the grass and her classic smile. It's just so her.

Breast Cancer Awareness - Pink Photo Challenge

I'm so proud of my hubby for taping up all his football players in pink athletic tape this month for breast cancer awareness month. I wish I could have photographed it, but I'm working when he does it and then I have to rush off to pick up the little one to get ready for the game. Maybe I'll try it this week if he lets me. *hint, hint*

It has been 5 years since we lost Grandma Jan to cancer and I believe she waited just long enough to see and hold this little one in her arms before she left us. So, the color pink is really special in our family. This is my entry for the iheartfaces Pink Photo Challenge...J Bird and her favorite color, pink.

365 Project: Days 20-31

Time to play catch up. Sometimes I don't know what's going on with my pictures. There are times when I think I forget everything I've learned in the last year and a half about my camera. It just goes to show that I really do need to practice, especially in those conditions that frighten me the most....straight into the sun, bad lighting, etc. So, that's exactly what I've been doing.

Here we go:

Day 20:
She loves this pink car given to her by her grandma & grandpa. I love how she just does her own thing. She dresses up like a cowgirl and gets into her pink car. All is good with the world.

Day 21:
I got a crafting bug into me and it was a little crazy there for a bit. This was a quick little try at making a headband with some leftover bandanna from her birthday party. Hey, we recycle and reuse! What a sweet kid for letting me try it on her. I think the chocolate pudding was the secret, though, as you can tell from her chocolate mustache.

Day 22:
Ok, so I missed a few days in here, but I was feeling a little rotten for a few days there. Thankfully, a few nights with my go-to remedy (Theraflu) and some TV surfing and all was good again.

Day 23:
The recent beautiful weather inspired me to get moving and do something a little more "photo shoot" like. So, I convinced my sweet J Bird to go on a mini shoot. We ended up playing more than anything else, but I did get some favorites and this is definitely one of them. It's so her. We will be going back for more.

Day 24:
I have to admit every time I look at this I get a bit teary eyed. In honor of my sweet mother-in-law, her struggle with cancer, and breast cancer awareness month I shot this very simple photo. It is a collection of mini crosses that belonged to her and they hang from our hutch in the dining room. It's this one cross that says it all when thinking of her.

Day 25:
Taken at a recent festival in town.

Day 26:
This was a quick snapshot taken as the sun was going down. As you can tell, she was playing hard to get.

Day 27:
A continuation of my crafting frenzy. I made this funky headband for photos. It wasn't intended for anything else. Besides, J Bird says it's too heavy. LOL. She wore it well, though.

Day 28:
It was such a beautiful evening and I couldn't resist the sun and these pretty little pink flowers in our front yard. Of course, J Bird had to make her way into the photo. She's the pink out of focus blob in the background playing tee ball.

Day 29:
At soccer practice trying to get my shot in for the day.

Day 30:
On the streets of New Orleans where I met my sister for an extremely rare getaway.

Day 31:
Another shot in the French Quarter as we strolled the area. The architecture is amazing. I didn't even mention the food we had while there. Oh my goodness, DELISH! Yeah, I didn't get photos of that. We were usually starving by the time we found a place to eat, so my camera was the last thing on our minds.

365 Project: Days 10-19

I think the biggest challenge for me with this project is obviously going to be creativity. It's not too difficult to get a shot in every day, but to get a decent creative shot is another thing all together. Here are my latest.

Day 10
This park recently opened and this water feature is extremely popular. As you can tell, she's easily entertained. I love the couple in the back shooting their infant daughter in the background.

Day 11
I actually tried to be creative on this day. I get these ideas in my head and sometimes it takes me a few days to actually get around to shooting what I want. This is an original 1869 Dottie Dimple book passed on down to me. It's amazing it has made it this long. Plus, in the background you can kind of make out a teacup that belonged to my grandmother.

Day 12
Her birthday dinner. She chose Joe's Crab Shack. Not one other child was in the playground. It was a little sad, but it was a school night after all.

Day 13

Day 14
Showing off her cool glow-in-the-dark Silly Bandz that Uncle Kyle and family gave her.

Day 15
I love these flowers (oleanders) and I remember putting them in J Bird's hair when she was younger so I could photograph her. Good idea, right? Then, hubby tells me they're poisonous and dangerous for children. Figures.

Day 16
I purchased these boots for J Bird's cowgirl themed party and I have been wondering ever since why I haven't owned these for 20 years already. Love these!!!!

Day 17
Sunset in the backyard. I almost missed my daily shot, but I squeezed one in and I loved the light coming in through the leaves (and fence.)

Day 18
After school ritual...throw shoes off, jump on couch and try to sneak in some tv time until mean old mom gets her busy doing something else. Time for some new shoes, huh?

Day 19
My personal favorite from the bunch. I don't know if it's because it's her classic "Mona Lisa" smile, her messy hair, or the sidewalk chalk on her face. My little sidewalk chalk artist.

The Big Day

So, I finally got around to working on the birthday pics from my sweet baby's party. I'm probably very lucky that I even got these photos taken at all. I'm absolutely terrible at taking pics at birthday parties or any other event where I'm talking or soaking in the fun. But hey, I can't fire myself, can I?

The night before the party it rained 3 inches in less than hour. Really? 3 inches? Come on! Needless to say, I was just little bit worried. Then, a couple of hours before the shindig it decides to rain a little more. Geez! Well, we put on our boots and got ready for a muddy mess anyway. Surprisingly, we had a lot of little troopers out there all enjoying themselves and sweating up a storm due to the crazy humidity that evening.

We arrived early to set up our tables, food and decorations. We had some extra time before our first guests arrived, so J Bird headed out for a ride.

Saddled up and ready to go. She is such a natural up there.

This is Moxie. She is a sweet, gentle horse and perfect for the kids. This was J Bird's horse.

Once J Bird's friends showed up, all she could think about was playing with them. It did give all the kiddos a chance to ride the horses, though. I have to admit, I thought she might want to hog up all the horse time. Nope, all she wanted to do was bounce with friends.

She did get the last ride, though. I was so proud watching her control this huge animal. Later that night, we discovered she hadn't eaten dinner because she was riding instead.

Whoa!!! She missed the obstacle here and was backing Moxie up to give it another try. I didn't have my zoom lens on my camera, but if I did you would be able to see the focus on her face. It really was unbelievable.

Uncle J.T. and Aunt Sister were in town for the party and apparently felt the party needed some clowns.

Paint The Pony (with washable paint, of course.)

She told me her birthday was so good that she didn't need to make a wish...but she did anyway. he,he,he.

Week One of My 365 Project

I know, I know...I'm already behind on posting this, but I have been really good about shooting something everyday. Sometimes it's just an everyday moment and sometimes I actually take the time to be creative. I can already tell this will be a challenge, but I am determined not to throw in the towel (at least not this early in the game anyway.) So, here are my first nine days of Project 365.

I love this first shot and her little Mona Lisa smile. I could have ended with this shot, but that throws my 365 project out the window doesn't it?

Day 2: Taken at a friend's birthday party for their 1 year old son. This is big sister K.K. being tossed by her daddy. Doesn't this look fun?

Day 3: I loved the way the flowers looked with all the teeny water droplets after the sprinklers were finished.

Day 4: J Bird and I just having crazy fun at bathtime. I almost missed my photo opportunity this day, but it turned out better than expected.

Day 5: J Bird's little mini-Bella. I'm sure she's forgotten about it by now with all her birthday gifts. Our house is being taken over by Barbie.

Day 6: I tried to get a fence shot in last week, since I haven't been active in Flickr's Fence Friday group in so long. My only opportunity was to stalk around my parent's backyard when I went over to pick up J Bird. They think nothing of me lying in their grass anymore. I did learn some new processing methods with this one (even though it's a little out of focus.) Can I get a "woot woot"!? No? huh, what?

Day 7: A shot from J Bird's soccer practice. These kids are hilarious. How does anyone coach 5 year olds anything? I love that it looks like they're doing something...like defense or who knows what.

Day 8: Awwww, my sweet baby girl turned 5 this week. We had a birthday party for her where the kiddos rode horses, painted a pony, and bounced and bounced and bounced and bounced. I promise I will post something eventually....before she's 8.

Day 9: Grandpa and Grandma, as always, must give the best birthday gift ever. Little J Bird asked Grandpa for a pony and boy did he deliver. He got her first Mustang..in pink, no less. Driving lessons are going slower than expected, though (she drives like her Grandma.)

Fix It Friday

Every Friday over at iheartfaces.com they offer up an image so we can have our try at editing it our way. So, I have to begin by saying that I DID NOT take this photo, but I am responsible for the edit you see below (good or bad.)

My processing is usually all over the place depending on what the original image looks like and I love to use My Four Hens Photography Actions or Florabella Actions. However, I decided to process this one (using Photoshop CS5) without any actions and here are my basic changes:

I added a levels layer set at screen to bring more light to their faces. I did use the layer mask to mask out those parts of the photo that were too bright.
I applied a curves layer and did some cross processing with the red and green channels.
Bumped up saturation and adjusted the hue just slightly towards blue
I added another levels layer to darken
Added a color balance layer to adjust for skin tone
Finally, I added a gorgeous Jessica Drossin texture for little extra pop.

I know these are fairly generic instructions, but if you have any questions let me know. I am by no means a pro or expert, but I will be glad to help. Here is my After version.

365 Project

The 365 Project is something that I never really considered I could possibly accomplish or even wanted to put myself through. One picture every day for 365 days. I was proud enough of the fact that I managed a 52 week photo project of my daughter, J Bird. It started when I knew close to nothing about photography and you can definitely see my progression and her development through the 52 weeks. You can check it out here if you haven't seen it yet. It was an amazing accomplishment for me, I have to admit.

The other day, however, I read a post by a friend who encouraged those of us passionate about photography and improving our skills to jump in with her and exercise our passion by taking a photo every. single. day! Now, how in the world will I do that? I have no idea. I do know that looking back a year, I can see how far I have come. So, who knows how far I will go in 365 days of practice. I know I want to move on to another level with my photography, but I'm not sure where that will be right now. I hope this project will lead me in the right direction. I can promise I will not post a picture here every day, but I will definitely keep shooting every day. I do hope to make a weekly post of my favorite shots from the week, though. Plus, you can always catch my latest on Flickr. So, here I go on another journey and I'm excited to find out where one photo a day will take me.

I Heart Faces Challenge

Turning Five

It's amazing how quickly time flies. It feels like it was only yesterday when I pushed out this "little" 9lb 5oz gift from heaven. Then last weekend, we all went out for a quick little shoot to get a picture for her birthday invites. Her 5th birthday! Wow, where does time go so quickly?

It was fun going through the photos and noticing how much she has changed in these short 5 years. She definitely has her own, unique little personality and it definitely shows.

My Favorite Place

In the middle of a busy work week, I find myself looking forward to visiting one of my favorite places, Quinta Mazatlan. It's a 1935 Spanish Revival Style mansion that was saved from the bulldozer by the city and serves as an extension to our World Birding Center. They have had some wonderful summer programs for children this year including a visit by Dr. Seuss' The Lorax and The Learning Channel's Dinosaur George. I love that the minute we walk onto the property you feel like you have left the city way behind. Even with so many folks around we can usually find some nice quiet time to ourselves and that's what I love the most. Of course, I then have to whip out the camera and plead with J Bird to stand still for a few seconds. It's these pictures that give me such a peaceful feeling even amid a crazy, busy work week.

Note to my fellow bloggers: I don't know what I did to get such terrible quality on some of my images. They look wonderful in Photoshop and I didn't do anything different when saving, but I'm disappointed with how they look in blogger. Any ideas?

The W Family Shoot

I have to give a HUGE thank you to the W Family for being my first non-family shoot. I had a great time meeting little Miss A. and her brother, Baby E. I have to admit I didn't know what to expect, especially after Miss A. gave me expressions like this at the beginning. Wow!

However, she's just the sweetest thing ever, and at 3 years old I'm completely amazed I was able to get as many shots as I did of her. I certainly can never do that with my own J Bird. So, here is a sneak peek at Miss A and Baby E's photo shoot from yesterday morning.

Sister Shoot

It's been a week since I had the chance to take my sister out for a quick little photo shoot. I can't explain how humid it was the morning of this shoot. I just know that I felt completely yucky when we were done. I love my family for putting up with me on this little adventure. We all made the trek to the train cars in our flip flops. Not the best shoes to wear with all the stones on the tracks. There weren't any trains running that day for those of you concerned for our safety and when they do run I can probably outrun them. Now, that's really saying a lot, trust me. I'm finally getting around to posting those pics. I really don't know how everyone processes their images so fast. I guess I'll eventually get the hang of it.

And I decided to go a little artsy on this last one by applying an artistic blur. I hope it doesn't make my sister's eyes hurt. LOL.

I have to first wish you a belated Memorial Day! Unfortunately, I spent it at work. Boo! BUT, my sister was off and has been visiting with us for a few days. Yay!

I had a chance to drag her out for a photo shoot on a nice and very humid morning. What a trooper. She complained only very little. ;-)

Let Summer Begin

Little J Bird is out of school for the summer. It's such a bummer that I have to be working during this time. She is so excited and full of energy. Today, hubby stayed with her all day long. By lunch time he was swearing she has ADD. Ummm, ok, Dad! It's funny the teachers that have been with her all year long never mentioned it. LOL. She does seem to think she's going to play, play, play all summer long. Ha...do we have her fooled.

This weekend we bought a small blowup pool to get help keep us cooled off this summer. Of course, J Bird couldn't wait to get in and so we all took the plunge. Really, I just dressed the part, because the moment I felt the cold water and the cool breeze I was done. Little J Bird toughed it out and had a good time, though.

Waiting

This shot reminded me that not every photo needs to be perfect and that sometimes I need to capture unexpected, unplanned moments like this one. I know it's not great technically, but in others ways I think it's perfect. Last Saturday, Grandma & Grandpa came over to pick J Bird up for the evening. My hubby and I had the rare opportunity to actually go out and see a movie during this time. In this shot, she had pulled out her desk chair and set up station by the front door waiting for them to arrive. It was really so cute. Now, if we could only get Grandma & Grandpa to do this more often. ;-)

I Heart Faces Photo Challenge: "Faces & Flowers"

This is my entry for the I Heart Faces weekly challenge. This is only the second time I've entered a photo at I Heart Faces. The competition is fierce and I know I am way out of league there. However, I love this face and these flowers, so I am going to submit this week. Believe it or not, I still have a few more pics that I am going to post from this shoot. I told you I had a gazillion shots to go through. It's for family so I know you will understand. :-)

Hill Country Visit

Yay! I finally have some of the pictures from our visit to the beautiful Texas Hill Country. You've probably seen most of these, but here are some of my faves. I really have had no time to work on pictures from this trip. I took so many! Plus, I'm getting ready to train teachers this summer, so time is scarce. Here ya' go!

It has been such a wonderful Mother's Day! I can't believe a week has gone by and I haven't posted the pics from my hill country trip. I will post them...eventually. This is one of my absolute favorites from that trip (that doesn't have the little one in it, of course.) I'm thinking of getting some prints. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good photo lab?

The Texas Hill Country

My very sweet hubby decided to surprise me a week early for Mother's Day and take me to the beautiful Texas Hill Country. It gave me an opportunity to take plenty of pictures of his beloved bluebonnets. Now that I think about it, I'm wondering if this was really about Mother's Day or maybe Dad was trying to get the perfect bluebonnet picture for Father's Day. Hmmm? Anyway, we did have a wonderful weekend and this is one of many pictures that I have yet to edit. I'll try to get them up as soon as I can. Until then, have a great week.

Chasing My Cowgirl

J. Bird is my four year old daughter who keeps most of my family on the run. My love of photography started with me chasing her around with a camera and it looks like it's here to stay. Hence, the evolution of Chasing J. Bird Photography. J. Bird is planning to have a horseback riding birthday party and is starting to get into the cowgirl theme already. She loves these boots and they would be great if she didn't have the sweatiest feet in the world.
